IS THE NIGERIAN JUDICIARY COMPROMISED?
A lot has been going on in Nigeria lately that left Nigerians wondering what and how did we get here?
It has been said a number of times that “the Judiciary is the last hope of the common man”, but is this saying true? In this short article, we will examine these facts to see if indeed the Judiciary is the last hope of the common man and how can the judiciary exonerate itself from the many allegations.
I intend for this article to be somehow brief so I am not going to go into details but will just scratch the surface. I will do this by citing a few examples and may be in my next article I will be able to be detailed having gathered more information especially from Nigerians and my readers world over, over what how they feel concerning the judicial system in Nigeria.
The Nigerian judiciary system has been facing a lot of criticisms lately because Nigerians feel that it has aligned with the current government to disenfranchise the citizens. Citizens feel that today in Nigeria, Justice is for sale to the highest bidder. Whether this is true or not, it is left for Nigerians to say and for the judiciary to proof otherwise. Why do the citizens feel this way? Of course, the answer is obvious, from the various elections to other legal issues. Today in Nigeria, if you don’t have money or you are nt highly connected, you can’t get justice. There are certain cases for instance, you have a problem with someone and he reports you to the police station, the police picks you and lock you up without necessarily questioning you to ascertain the truth of the matter. This is just police station not to talk of our courts. Our courts are becoming notoriously scary because there has not been any system to checkmate what the judges are doing. And the pathetic thing about this whole thing is that, while the judiciary sold its right to the federal government, it has not been immune to the regime’s assault. The question is, to what end?
Now to the few examples: Politically if you are connected or you have resources in Nigeria, you can buy any judge of your choice. That being said however does not mean there are clean judges who cannot be bought over. There are a few of them and because they can’t be bought over, they are either removed under fallacious allegations or terrorized. Yes you heard me right! Terrorized. Few examples are Justice Walter Onnoghen who was removed under the disguise of corruption and other fallacious allegations which have not been proven until this day, and I challenge my readers, find out for yourself if Justice Onnoghen has been convicted of any of the allegations labelled against him. And if not, has the federal government apologized to him for the embarrassment? Not yet! And certainly they will never do that. Another example is that of the judges hunted in the dead of the night in Rivers State but for the intervention of Governor Nyesom Wike. Till this moment, nobody has been reprimanded for that rogue behaviour. We have also seen how the DSS entered the court with their weapons and even threaten a judge during the case of Omoyele Sowere. All these are examples that are in the public domain and people can find out for themselves.
Are the politicians not boasting about winning elections? You think it is in vain? No! An African adage says, “when a child challenges you for a fight, know that, his father is behind him.” Of course for some of these politicians to be boasting of winning elections or challenging others and saying even if people vote otherwise, they will go to court and claim the mandate, they definitely know that they can buy their way into the judges’ hearts with their big pockets and secure whatever they need to even though they can’t come close when it comes to pedigree. A case of Imo State is one good example, where someone that came third was announced by ‘THE SUPREME COURT!’ of Nigeria. Unbelievable! Can’t say no more.
Of recent, just day before yesterday the 10th of November 2021 Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was taken to court because of the charges the federal government has against him, but everything that happened in the court was just a sham. Some of his counsels were not even allowed into the court. In fact, one of his lawyers from America Bruce Feign was not allowed into the court, according to him, “Today was the fifth time I was told I could not enter the courtroom despite court’s previous order that Nnamdi could have access to any three persons he wants to.” I had the chance to talk briefly to him on my way to the courtroom. It is clear that I am the target in particular. That’s the reason why this proceeding did not transpire today.” These were the words of the American lawyer. And this is a national shame to this country. What do you think this man will say about Nigeria? Oh by the way, he said something about Nigeria and it’s notoriety and I am going to drop the comment soon.
How did we get here in the first place? How can the judiciary allow itself to be a pawn in the hands of the executive despite it’s powers? I thought as learned people who understands the knitty gritty of the law can stand it’s grounds and protect it’s image? How on earth did we end up like this? Even in military juntas, we have not seen this cowardly behavior nor this level longer throat according to Nigerian parlance. This is so unfortunate.
While all these are going on, terrorists are allowed to go about their normal business, some are even integrated into the security system but citizens demanding for good governance are being criminalized while the judges are the pawns used to achieved are these ungodly aims.
This is what Mr. Bruce feign said about Nigerian system his words, “I have not seen a country with so much open to notorious lawlessness like Nigeria.
Nigerian courts are highly compromised”
To call this a national shame is an understatement, it is an international shame, and this is happening under the so called, “Mai Gaskiya”. Now, whether this is true or not, it is left for the judiciary to salvage whatever is left of its image but for now, Nigerians are holding their lenses and watching them.

IS ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED?
There has been a lot of argument on the subject of eternal salvation or what some people call, “Eternal Security”, this has lingered for a very long time and I feel I need to clear the air on that. In doing that, I will be using the scriptures to support whatever I believe is the right thing. In addition, I will also clear the air on wrong perception that a lot of believers even ministers of the gospel have on the message of “Grace”.
This should not have been a subject of debate, but because there is so much knowledge gap in the body of Christ today it has become a subject of debate.
Let me begin with this question, Is once saved always saved?
The scriptures will answer this particular questions therefore be patient and follow me gradually as we unearth this priceless truth that is able to set you free.
Our text is taken from the book of John 3:15
That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.(KJV)
Now, let us examine this verse critically. The Bible says, “That Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (Emphasis mine)
If you look at this text critically you would see that it clearly states that “Whosoever” which means ‘anyone’ wherever the person may be as long as he believes in Christ, he shall not Perish. (Emphasis mine). Perish has to do with destruction, to spoil or to not last. In Greek it is ‘apollumi’ meaning Perish or Destroy. And what is eternal life? Eternal life means to live forever, to last, to live in a world without end. In Greek it is ‘aionios’ meaning ‘everlasting’
Wait a minute! Does it mean that Christ doesn’t know what he was talking about when he said this? The answer is NO! Christ indeed knew what he was talking about, but some preachers who are legalistic would want us to believe otherwise. The question I always ask them is that, between them and Christ, who should we believe?
Of course Christ! Reason is not far fetched. They have nothing to give, they can’t even save themselves let alone another but Christ has the power to save that he has done and finished it. Jesus said, “that they may have everlasting (eternal) life! Everlasting means everlasting. It is something that lasts forever. For those who believe that you can lose your salvation, Jesus Christ, the author of our salvation said, “whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” So what’s your problem or what is your argument here? My candid advice is for you is to go back to the real study of the word. Now I don’t mean “reading of the word.” I said, “study” because they are two
Times without number I have pastors boasts on pulpit that they have read the bible through many times, but whenever they stand to preach, you wonder which bible they claimed they have read. Now, I am not saying this to despise anyone, but the point is this, if indeed you read the whole bible as many times as you have been saying, I am sure you did it so as to know the bible and its content more, but if you argue this subject out, then you would have wasted your precious time reading only a book or perhaps while you were reading, your mind was not there or you want to prove that you can read the whole bible like others do.
Now back to our text, we are reading from another translation to give us a wider perspective.
That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting. – John 3:15 (DRV)
Let’s have a look at another translation:
that every one who believes on him may [not perish, but] have life eternal.
- John 3:15 (DARBY)
DRV said “Life everlasting” while Darby said, “Life eternal”. Now this is the reason why I said this should not have been a subject of debate in the church or among believers. And remember, that verse above is talking to only believers. “Whosoever believeth”.
The last translation I want us to look at is the Amplified. Now this is the killer!
In order that everyone who believes in Him [who cleaves to Him, trusts Him, and relies on Him] may not perish, but have eternal life and [actually] live forever! John 3:15 (AMP)
Now, if you allow some people, they will remove this from the bible, why? Because they already have a mindset that once saved is not forever saved. There are reasons they believe once saved is not forever saved and we are going to look at all that. I have to be very careful to do justice to this subject or topic so as to clear the doubts of so many people out their who have been misled over the years in believing they can lose their salvation as if they did anything to keep it. You can’t do anything to keep your salvation because you have not done anything to earn it in the first place. And no matter what you do, you can never earn it by yourself, if it were, Christ would not have come.
Let us now have a look at John 3:16 a verse that we all memorized from childhood, and I guess we do not as much think on what we memorize daily.
Reading from Amplified:
For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. – John 3:16 (AMP)
I don’t need to dwell on this verse because it is very clear and I have earlier spoken extensively on it from vs. 15 of that same chapter,
Once Saved, always saved:
Like I said earlier, this is not a subject of argument, the bible is already clear about that. Now let us look at this scripture or these scriptures:
And I give them eternal life, and they will never, ever [by any means] perish;
And no one will ever snatch them out of my hand.
- My father, who has given them to me is, is greater and mightier than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the father’s hand.
Is this also in your Bible? Christ himself said he gave you eternal life. And no one will be able to snatch you out of his hand.
The message here is, if you are the one that saved yourself, then you can lose salvation, but if he is the one that saved you, you can never lose salvation. If I hold unto God, I could at some point let go, but if God is the one holding me, he can never let go of me. – John 10:28,29 (Amp)
Jesus Christ speaking said, “And I give them eternal life.” Now this verse is completely agreeing with the earlier verse we read in John 3:15,16. He reiterated that he gave them eternal life and not temporal or temporary life. Did you see that in your bible? He also said, “and no one is able to snatch them out of the father’s hand.”
Tell me, what is that strong force that is able to forcefully plug you out of the grip of God? Not even sin can!
You have been sealed:
Now, this is another shocker! In Ephesians 4:30 the bible says, “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” (KJV)
What does it mean to be sealed? In Greek it is called, “sphragízō” (from /sphragís, “a seal”) – properly, to seal (affix) with a signet ring or other instrument to stamp (a roller or seal), i.e. to attest ownership, authorizing (validating) what is sealed.
Going by the above, you don’t need anybody to tell you that this matter is already settled. You have been sealed unto the dday of redemption my brother/sister! Let no man deceive you, once you are saved, you are forever saved. God’s gifts are never temporal, they are eternal. Like someone would say, Salvation that God gives is follow come according to Nigerian parlance. When God gives you, it stays with you. Let us look at this beautiful verse of the scripture and we are reading from the Amplified:
For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.] Romans 11:29 (AMP)
If you are a Pastor, Bishop, Prophet or anything you call yourself and you are still doubting this, then I can confidently say, you are not of the fold. NO! Let me come out in plain language to you, You are simply not Born Again.
There is no better word than that. Haven gone through all these scriptures as we have seen here and you are still arguing about this issue of salvation. I am sorry, you are not saved in the first place.
Let’s quickly look at other verses:
He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but because of His own pity and mercy, by [the] cleansing [bath] of the new birth (regeneration) and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Which He poured out [so] richly upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. [And He did it in order] that we might be justified by His grace (by His favor, wholly undeserved), [that we might be acknowledged and counted as conformed to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action], and that we might become heirs of eternal life according to [our] hope. Titus 3:5-7 (AMP)
Please, what more do I need to convince you?
For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God; Not because of works [not the fulfillment of the Law’s demands], lest any man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.] Ephesians 2:8-9 (AMP)
None can be justified by works
Yet we know that a man is justified or reckoned righteous and in right standing with God not by works of the Law, but [only] through faith and [absolute] reliance on and adherence to and trust in Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). [Therefore] even we [ourselves] have believed on Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law [for we cannot be justified by any observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses], because by keeping legal rituals and by works no human being can ever be justified (declared righteous and put in right standing with God). Galatians 2:16 (AMP)
You may also like this: WHY WOULD GOD AGAIN ALLOW OR TAKE THE MAN HE CREATED INTO HELL TO PERISH THERE?
For we walk by faith [we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervor; thus we walk] not by sight or appearance. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (AMP)
For in the Gospel a righteousness which God ascribes is revealed, both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed through the way of faith that arouses to more faith]. As it is written, The man who through faith is just and upright shall live and shall live by faith. (AMP)
But the just shall live by faith [My righteous servant shall live by his conviction respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, and holy fervor born of faith and conjoined with it]; and if he draws back and shrinks in fear, My soul has no delight or pleasure in him. (AMP)
Here, it is very clear that your works doesn’t count nor your own appearance but it is faith that counts.
The question is, where are you? Who are you holding or who is holding you? Read the text above and judge for yourself..
Your sins are forgiven once and for all
I still find it hard brethren to reconcile the fact that a lot of Christians fail to believe that their sins have been forgiven once and for all.
The bible however is very clear about this:
- For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ..
- Therefore as by the offence of one judgement came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
- For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
It was easy for you to believe that because Adam sinned so all of us became sinners because of that sin even though we were not there when it happened, how can you not still believe that through the supreme price that Jesus paid we have been made righteous?
How dare you belittle the work of God?
Now let me address some concerns raised by many whenever the message of grace is preached.
Is Grace licence to sin?
This is one of the most questions people ask whenever we raise the issue once saved forever saved, and the reason people ask this question is because they do not know Grace. They do not recognize that Grace is a personality, and that personality is Jesus Christ. Now I ask you this question, can Jesus give you licence to sin? No way. To set the records straight, there is no correlation whatsoever between Grace and sin.
For sin shall not [any longer] exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law [as slaves], but under grace [as subjects of God’s favor and mercy]. (AMP)
Shall we continue in sin?
WHAT SHALL we say [to all this]? Are we to remain in sin in order that God’s grace (favor and mercy) may multiply and overflow? Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer? Are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? (AMP)
Now hear how Titus responded to this:
For the grace of God (His unmerited favor and blessing) has come forward (appeared) for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind. It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness (irreligion) and worldly (passionate) desires, to live discreet (temperate, self-controlled), upright, devout (spiritually whole) lives in this present world, (AMP)
Should I tell you more? I think, I have proven to you that once you are saved, you are forever saved, and I have also showed you that Grace is never a licence to sin and will never be so what is your excuse? Swallow your pride and learn at the feet of the master and your life will be better for it. I just want to let you kow that we are called to #RestinChrist. Shalom!
